Meet the 2025 Summit Sponsors: A Q&A with Mill

May 15, 2025

This is part of our Summit Sponsor Series, which features articles written by sponsors of the ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit about the food waste work they are doing. All views and opinions expressed in these articles are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of ReFED.

1. What is the name of your organization and what do you do?

Mill is a food recycling system that makes it easy for people to prevent wasted food at home and at work. Mill dries and dehydrates food scraps into clean, dry grounds that can be used to feed animals or enrich soil. The Mill food recycler is quiet, odorless, low-energy, and requires virtually no work to turn food scraps into a resource.

2. Why is addressing food waste important to your organization?

Mill exists to keep food out of the landfill because wasted food is expensive and inefficient for our families, communities, and infrastructure. In the US, 40% of food we grow ends up going to waste and the average American family of four spends $3,000/year on wasted food. At Mill we have built technology for sustainable behavior change, making it easy for people to prevent food waste while enjoying a better, cleaner kitchen experience.

3. What are some ways that your organization works to reduce food waste? Any examples that you’d like to highlight?

The Mill Food Recycler dries and grinds food scraps overnight into shelf-stable, odorless grounds, which can become food for soil or food for animals like chickens. Today, Mill is in tens of thousands of homes and businesses across the US, and together we helped people keep over 8M lbs of food out of the landfill. According to a recent survey of Mill customers, nearly half said that having Mill has resulted in a reduction of the overall amount of wasted food they produce.

4. Why is your organization sponsoring the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit?

To connect with fellow organizations working on food waste reduction.

5. What’s one thing you’re most looking forward to at the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit?

Sharing the newest data from Mill regarding behavior change and food waste prevention.

6. What is a fun fact about your organization?

For a company retreat last summer, our engineering team developed a custom firmware build for our device which allowed them to cook chili from scratch for the entire company — IN the Mill.
