Meet the 2025 Summit Sponsors: A Q&A with Amazon

June 18, 2025

This is part of our Summit Sponsor Series, which features articles written by sponsors of the ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit about the food waste work they are doing. All views and opinions expressed in these articles are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of ReFED.

1. What is the name of your organization and what do you do?

At Amazon, we aim to provide shoppers what they’re looking for online and in person. From delivering fresh produce to their doorstep to creating and distributing movies, music, and more, we are always finding new ways to delight our customers. Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking.

2. Why is addressing food waste important to your organization?

We're dedicated to keeping nutritious food on tables and out of landfills through improved inventory management, customer discount programs that offer quality food at lower prices, donations to local food rescue organizations, and composting initiatives. By tackling food waste, we're supporting communities as we work toward our goal of reducing food waste by 50% across our U.S. and Europe operations by 2030.

3. What are some ways that your organization works to reduce food waste? Any examples that you’d like to highlight?

We prioritize reducing surplus inventory, and when that is not possible, we focus on donation to reduce waste generated. We then ensure any remaining food waste follows the hierarchy and as much is diverted to organic waste treatment as possible. In 2024, Whole Foods Market launched a program with Too Good To Go, a social impact company that has created a marketplace app for surplus food. Through this program, Too Good To Go’s app enables customers to access high-quality food at discounted prices at 536 Whole Foods Market stores across the U.S. Whole Foods Market diverted an equivalent of 636,000 meals from waste in the U.S. as part of this effort in 2024.

4. Why is your organization sponsoring the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit?

Amazon is sponsoring the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit to accelerate collaborative solutions in the fight against food waste. As we work toward our goal of reducing food waste by 50% across our U.S. and Europe operations by 2030, we recognize that industry-wide innovation and knowledge sharing are essential. By providing scholarship opportunities that enable broader participation in this important forum, we're helping ensure all voices and perspectives can contribute to building a more sustainable food system.

5. What’s one thing you’re most looking forward to at the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit?

We're most looking forward to connecting with other organizations committed to reducing food waste and sharing best practices. The collective expertise at the Summit offers a unique opportunity to discover innovative approaches that can help us all accelerate progress toward our shared goals. We're particularly interested in exploring scalable solutions that benefit both environmental sustainability and community food security.

6. What is a fun fact about your organization?

As part of our commitment to this Summit, we're excited to host tours of Climate Pledge Arena, the world's first net zero carbon certified arena. These tours will showcase how sustainability principles can be integrated into large-scale operations and public venues—demonstrating that the same innovative thinking we apply to food waste can transform other aspects of our environmental impact as well.

7. Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Fun fact: Amazon named the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, the world's first net zero carbon certified arena! The venue uses reclaimed rainwater from the roof to create the greenest ice in the NHL, composts all food waste, and is powered by 100% renewable electricity. It's a living example of our commitment to sustainability and innovative thinking—the same approach we bring to tackling food waste challenges.
