Rethinking Food Rescue: Exploring Consolidation & Collaboration to Scale Impact [ReFED Learning Labs]

Food rescue plays a vital role in keeping edible surplus food out of landfills while helping feed people experiencing food insecurity. In 2024, about 1.7 million tons of food was donated through the charitable food system, yet just under 13% of the food identified as potentially donatable actually reached people. The opportunity to expand food rescue is significant, but doing so may require new approaches to building capacity and strengthening the sector.
