Climate Week 2024: ReFED's Key Takeaways

October 2, 2024

We’re still catching our breath after Climate Week in New York City! The ReFED team covered a lot of ground and participated in a number of events, including co-hosting a “Moonshot Workshop” with XPRIZE that attracted 70+ funders, food businesses, innovators, and other experts to identify the most-pressing challenges for food loss and waste reduction and to discuss how capital (including a potential XPRIZE challenge prize) can accelerate solution development. Thinking back on the week, some key takeaways stand out:

  • Food is central to the greatest global crises of our time, yet we’re still trying to position food and agriculture in the center of the climate conversation. We’re hopeful about the growing momentum to bring investment and solutions available in the space to the fore.

  • The community is coming together around the need to reduce methane emissions as an “emergency brake” in the climate fight. Wasting less food is a critical lever to reduce methane emissions—and new ReFED data reveals the methane hotspots for surplus food across the supply chain in the U.S. and highlights corresponding solutions that can slash methane emissions. (ReFED’s Insights Engine now includes data on the methane impacts of surplus food and solutions to address it.)

  • Encouraging consumers to take action—and giving them the tools to do so—was also a hot topic of conversation. And with most food waste generated in households, it’s an interesting time to consider all of the ways to reach consumers given that EPA recently announced funding for a national consumer food waste prevention campaign.

And as always, the power of collaboration was highlighted as critical—we need more and better collaboration and information sharing, aligning key players around our shared goal. Stakeholders all along the circular value chain have a role to play, from incorporating regenerative agricultural practices, to focusing on the “act” in Target-Measure-Act, to engaging employees in sustainable behavior change.
