Meet the 2025 Summit Sponsors: A Q&A with Flashfood
May 21, 2025
This is part of our Summit Sponsor Series, which features articles written by sponsors of the ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit about the food waste work they are doing. All views and opinions expressed in these articles are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of ReFED.
1. What is the name of your organization and what do you do?
Flashfood is an app-based marketplace connecting shoppers with affordable, fresh and nutritious groceries. We partner with retailers across North America to reduce their food waste, by enabling them to list food either in surplus or nearing its best-by date on the Flashfood app, where shoppers can purchase it for 50% off.
2. Why is addressing food waste important to your organization?
Flashfood was founded to reduce food waste at the retail level. While retail food waste makes up a relatively small percentage of overall food waste, it’s still a meaningful amount of waste given how much food retailers move. As we grew, we heard from our shoppers that the reason they love Flashfood is because it enables them to feed their families fresh, affordable groceries like produce, meat, and dairy. Reducing food waste is today half of our mission: to feed families, not landfills.
3. What are some ways that your organization works to reduce food waste? Any examples that you’d like to highlight?
Every sale on Flashfood is a reduction in food waste, because the items our retailer partners list on the app are items that would otherwise be thrown away. This includes fresh produce either in surplus or nearing the end of its life, which is sold in the Flashfood Produce Box, a 10 lb box of mixed fruits and vegetables. This is our #1 selling item on Flashfood – in 2024 alone, we sold 1.3 million produce boxes, equivalent to approximately 13 million pounds of produce. At a high level, our participating retail partners reduce their shrink by an average of 45%. This not only helps them achieve their waste reduction goals, it enables them to make additional money off of food they were previously throwing away.
4. Why is your organization sponsoring the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit?
The ReFED community is incredibly important to us. We want to reach new businesses, connect with other mission-aligned organizations, and speak with policymakers and other stakeholders that are potential collaborators.
5. What’s one thing you’re most looking forward to at the 2025 ReFED Food Waste Solutions Summit?
We’re excited to meet other organizations in the waste reduction space and talk about how we can continue to build this ecosystem together. We’ll also be releasing our 2024 annual Impact Report, which we’re excited to share.
6. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
We’ll be recording episodes of our podcast series, The Leftovers, at ReFED this year. If you’d like to participate, please reach out!
7. What is a fun fact about your organization?
On our mission to reduce food waste, we've saved shoppers $330 million dollars on their groceries.
